ISOC Japan Chapter
11:00 – 12:00: Live panel: Personal Freedom and Rights on Internet for next 25 years

While Internet has been spread into our society, thousands of new cultures and innovations had been developed by people utilizing freedom space such as an e-mail, Web and Social Media. However, we had several incidents (rights violations, limitations on the freedom) that Internet has been abused to control our society and people.

As 25 years’ anniversary of Internet Society, Society and Internet are merged into one world. Now, what kind of positive role the Internet to help solving the issues in areas of personal freedom and human rights should be? From Tokyo, we will discuss and propose to the world.

The session will explore questions such as:

  • To what extent will the Internet be used as a tool to influence and control society rather than promote freedom and human rights?
  • Will people have meaningful choices to “unplug or disconnect” and determine how they utilize the Internet or will it be unavoidably pervasive?
  • Will the risks of the Internet to freedom and rights outweigh the benefits to society and the individual? If so, what reaction will this evoke?
