Learn About the Internet Way of Networking
Find courses, workshops, and other resources to learn more about the foundations of the Internet.
The Internet Way of Networking is the technical description that the Internet Society has developed to explain how the Internet works and what it needs to stay healthy. We offer courses, workshops, and other resources to help you understand and use this framework to do an Impact Assessment.
Take a Self-Paced Course
The Internet Society offers self-paced courses that will help you do a more thorough, holistic analysis. They’re free to all members (Internet Society membership is also free). You’ll learn about what makes the Internet possible, what could hurt it, and why it’s crucial to defend it.
- What the Internet Needs to Exist covers what we call the critical properties.
- What the Internet Needs to Thrive covers what we call the enablers.
- How to Develop an Internet Impact Brief is a course specifically designed to support writing an Impact Brief.

Read Internet Impact Briefs
Internet Impact Briefs have already been used to shape and improve the policy landscape around the globe. We’ve published a number of them in our repository, where you can find examples of strong, expert-backed arguments for defending and supporting the Internet.
Take the Policymakers’ Course
This is a four-day program aimed at regulators, government officials, and advisors. It’s held several times a year in person at IETF events. You don’t need a technical background to participate, but it is by invitation only.
