Working To Keep The Internet Open In Yemen

By Raúl EcheberríaFormer Vice President, Global Engagement, and Former Trustee

As we all know, Internet freedom around the world is volatile. This morning our Internet Society Yemen Chapter issued the following statement:

As an independent organization concerned with the right of users to access the Internet freely, the Internet Society Yemen Chapter (ISOC-Yemen) condemns and denounces the acts of censorship that have recently targeted several Yemeni websites. ISOC-Yemen urgently calls upon the Yemeni authorities involved to immediately unblock those websites and stresses that the current turmoil in Yemen should not be used as a pretext to tamper with accessing the Internet, which should remain open for all users to use without restrictions.

As a global organization, we share our Chapter’s concern about the recent reports of censorship and restrictions of Internet access coming out of Yemen. I believe that the Internet Society should play an active role in bringing emerging threats to online freedom such as this to light and in encouraging open access to the Internet, everywhere.

We support our Yemen chapter in asking the Yemeni authorities to restore full and open Internet access for all the people of Yemen.
