NIC.BR and the Internet Society Work Together to Increase Routing Security in Brazil

By Raúl EcheberríaFormer Vice President, Global Engagement, and Former Trustee

This week on Tuesday, 26 June, the Internet Society and NIC.BR signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together to increase routing security in Brazil, including the MANRS initiative. Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security is a global initiative that provides crucial fixes to reduce the most common routing threats.

We are excited to strengthen our efforts to work together with NIC.br, and in fact this MoU only formalizes an existing long-term relationship between the two organizations. Our goal is to help increase the number of Brazilian Internet Service Providers and Internet Exchange Points joining efforts for a more secure and resilient Internet.

Not a single day goes by without dozens of incidents affecting the Internet’s routing system. Route hijacking, route leaks, IP address spoofing, and other harmful activities can lead to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, traffic inspection and surveillance, lost revenue, reputational damage, and more. As one of the biggest countries with high access rates, Brazil is also facing these incidents on a daily basis.

NIC.BR is responsible for the coordination and integration of all Internet service initiatives in Brazil, including long-standing activities related to Internet security. They are also responsible for many projects that can amplify those efforts, such as IX.br, the ASN course. It’s worth mentioning that NIC.br manages up to 32 Internet Exchanges Points (IXPs) in Brazil, which is an incredible achievement that puts them among the 5 biggest in the world. Within the national operators’ groups, such as GTER, they have already been implementing good routing security and even exceeding the requirements of the MANRS actions.

Working together with our local chapter, taking MANRS as a global reference point, it provides an opportunity for ISPs and ASNs to signal their security posture to customers and regulators and to join a community of security-minded organizations who work together to resolve Internet routing security issues.

NIC.br and ISOC are fine-tuned and share the vision of an open, secure, global Internet that allows innovation and opportunities for all. This MoU enhances the actions of our Internet Segura initiative, which has MANRS as an important partner. It is crucial to disseminate the knowledge and improve the skills of almost 6,000 active ASNs in Brazil,” reinforces Demi Getschko, President Director of NIC.br.

We are happy to see Brazil leading the way in the region to increase routing security at the domestic level. The Internet is everyone’s responsibility, and these types of collaborative efforts to ensure its security are vital to a globally safe and secure infrastructure. Internet Society Brazil is honored to be a part of today’s MoU signing and the national routing security activities going forward,” said Flavio Wagner from the Internet Society Brazil Chapter.

It is our collective responsibility as network operators to ensure the reliability and security of the Internet. Help us make the Internet a safer place and Protect the Core. We look forward to welcoming more MANRS members from Brazil, and working together with NIC.BR to improve routing security around the world.
