The Internet Society observes the increased use of the term “digital sovereignty” to rationalize government measures and policies that either target or involve the Internet, some of which could have negative consequences on way the Internet operates, and its utility to the global community.
Through the Digital Sovereignty project, the Internet Society will study how such efforts could affect the Internet’s development and evolution.
Prior to starting the project in April 2022, the Internet Society sought organization members’ views on digital sovereignty to inform how the Internet Society might approach this issue-specifically how digital sovereignty has or might affect organization members, to help ensure that the output of this project is relevant to their work.
