This event marked a significant milestone of 20 years of progress made in implementing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), which began with the goal of achieving a shared commitment to building a people-centric, inclusive, and development-oriented Information Society where everyone can create and share information.
We attended the event to:
- Advocate for an open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy Internet and the implementation of the WSIS action lines and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Contribute to WSIS+20 stocktaking and review.
- Showcase the important work of the global Internet Society community.
- Support the multistakeholder model in the context of the ongoing Global Digital Compact process and upcoming IGF 2024 and WTSA 2024 events.
About WSIS
The World Summit of the Information Society (WSIS) was a two-phase (2003 and 2005) UN Conference that defined the issues, policies, and frameworks to tackle the Information and Communication technologies to foster development. Some of its relevant outcomes are the WSIS Action Lines –as defined in the Geneva Plan of Action– and the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society, which offers a working definition of Internet Governance, and the Internet Governance Forum mandate.
The WSIS+20 Forum High-Level Event was co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD and co-hosted by ITU and the Swiss Confederation, with the support of remote participation.
